Check it out and enjoy!

Beau - "The Way It Was" - vinyl news...

I have some sad news and some glad news!

The sad news is Ritual Echo Records, who back in 2012 released my “The Way It Was” album in glorious 180gm vinyl, are no longer trading. The glad news is that I’ve acquired what remained of their stock!

I’m selling SIGNED COPIES of these beautiful LPs for £10-00 each, plus shipping. With fifteen tracks, customised labels and a fully annotated inner sleeve, these Ritual Echo albums are wonderful examples of “21st Century vinyl”.

Shipping cost to the UK (2nd Class) is £4.50 (please email me for ROW). Orders through PayPal please to cjtmidgley@gmail.com.

"The Way It Was" - combo vinyl + CD package...

Now here's a weird one - a company in the States offering my vinyl Ritual Echo set, "The Way It Was" in a package with an audiophile quality CD - and all for the very reasonable price of an arm and a leg!

Alternatively, if anyone needs advice on how to burn a CDR...

Beau - "Today Began A Thousand Years Ago" live, with soundboard audio...

With thanks to Douglas Armour for the video, I've just uploaded a soundboard-audio version of "Today Began A Thousand Years Ago" from a live set in Lichfield, Staffordshire in April 2012.

Beau - "The Titanic Tragedy" and Encyclopedia Titanica...

I just discovered an excellent site – Encyclopedia Titanica – which contains a veritable wealth of info on the tragic loss in 1912 of RMS Titanic, en route at the time to New York.

It reminded me of this never-before-seen video from years ago of my song, “The Titanic Tragedy”.

The track came out in April 2012 a hundred years to the day after the sinking, on the download and vinyl LP, “The Way It Was”.

Recorded live in Lichfield, UK in 2012 at the party to mark the release of the vinyl “The Way It Was”, this much improved version of “Where Is Your Gun, My Son?” now has audio from the soundboard.

Many thanks to James Brough for his sterling work on the desk at the George IV.

Beau - "Live In Lichfield" (2012) - the full soundboard recording...

It’s a sort of ’tween Xmas and New Year prezzie!

This is the full live set from the gig on 14th April 2012 at the George IV, Lichfield. It was the launch show for my new Ritual Echo vinyl LP, “The Way It Was”.

Several people have asked if the soundboard recording was going to be made available. Well here it is; for all those who couldn’t make it on the night or those who’d like to hear it again…

There's a small amount of low-level noise during the spoken passages - maybe a bit of unshielded cable somewhere on the line. It’s not particularly intrusive. Also, a recorder malfunction occurred lasting around 15 seconds during 'The Titanic Tragedy'. Luckily, another recording of the set was sourced and a splice inserted for the lost section. There is a difference in quality but I don’t think anyone’s enjoyment will be spoiled!

Recorded in Lichfield, Staffordshire, grateful thanks are due to Chris McGranaghan & James Brough who made everything happen on the night.

Concert and Mastering Engineer - James Brough
Additional Engineering - Trevor Midgley
Concert Producer - Chris McGranaghan

Enjoy!

"Cry For The Priest" live at The Castle, Manchester...

“Cry For The Priest” tells of the circumstances surrounding the death in Poland in 1984 of Father Jerzy PopieÅ‚uszko, a Solidarność-supporting priest.

The original, complete with the full story, appears on my 2012 vinyl album, “The Way It Was” from Ritual Echo Records.

New review of "The Way It Was" in Flashback Magazine...

The #2 issue of the excellent Flashback Magazine includes a great review of the vinyl release of "The Way It Was".

This transcribed version is reproduced with the kind permission of the editor, Richard Morton Jack.

BEAU
The Way It Was
(Ritual Echo LP)
Few musical veterans from the 1960s have staged a comeback comparable to that of 12-string maestro Beau, the performing alter ego of Yorkshire-born Trevor Midgley. After releasing two compelling LPs for John Peel's short-lived Dandelion Records (and scoring the company's only major hit single, albeit in the Lebanon), he fell off the radar. Unlike Syd Barrett and Nick Drake, his withdrawal wasn't the result of indifference, substance abuse or mental health issues. Indeed, while Midgley pursued a successful career in the home loan industry during the 1970s and 1980s, Beau was relentlessly writing and recording new material - literally hundreds of compositions - but without a label to give him exposure. Things began to change, however, with the release of the well-received Edge Of The Dark CD in 2009, which featured songs recorded between 1972 and 1985. Its appearance was the opening of a long-closed musical floodgate.

The Way It Was marks Beau's first album of all-new recordings since 1971, and finds him in remarkably good form. There are no awkward attempts to update the music's sound; in similar fashion to his first Dandelion LP, it’s an intimate affair with voice and guitar providing the only instrumentation. The unique tunings on his beloved Harmony Sovereign H-1270 produce a full and warm tone that perfectly complements his robust voice. The performances range from lyrical narratives to biographical tributes to musical morality plays to personal meditations on the human condition. The title track ponders the price of success, while Castle Song deals with willful ignorance of unpleasant matters. Cry For The Priest, Where Is Your Gun, My Son?, The Titanic Tragedy, The Part We Have To Play and At The End Of The Day respectively pertain to the murder of Polish anti-Communist activist Jerzy Popieluzko, life in Stalin-era Russia, the 100th anniversary of the luxury liner’s sinking, the Presidency of Ronald Reagan and the senseless deaths of three soldiers during World War I. The Rabbi At The Gates Of Prague imaginatively revisits a well-worn tale, and Kiss Me With Your Eyes finds the singer performing a rare love song (originally part of a musical about the life of Andy Warhol). Web Of Tangled Reason and Songs You Sing represent Beau at his self-contemplative best. All in all, this is an excellent listening experience for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking material.

Ritual Echo have done a fantastic job of repackaging what was originally a download-only release. The sepia-toned sleeve is most appropriate for the mood of the music, and lends the product a nicely vintage appearance. The LP also boasts Beau's informative liner notes, complete lyric transcriptions, and a commentary on each song. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, it possesses a comforting natural sound that will soothe ears ravaged by excessive MP3 exposure. Here's hoping that we hear more from Beau and the good people at Ritual Echo. (Scott D. Wilkinson)

"The Way It Was" - Shindig! review...

A really nice review of "The Way It Was" has appeared in Issue #27 of UK print mag, Shindig! Here's what Alan Brown, the reviewer has to say:
BEAU
The Way It Was Ritual Echo LP

In 1972, John Peel and Clive Selwood’s Dandelion Records called it a day, as did Beau, the label’s first signing. With no record company knocking on his door and his third album, High Mass, left in limbo, the under-appreciated singer-songwriter decided to concentrate on his career at the Halifax Building Society. Thankfully, he continued to write plaintive, observational story songs.

Forty years on, the folk troubadour has returned with a new 15-track album pressed on 180-gram vinyl and limited to 200 copies. And like the only instrument heard here, Beau’s ’67 Harmony 12-string acoustic, The Way It Was recalls those halcyon days when Phil Ochs’ protest songs rang out. Soothingly, it also sounds like a companion piece to his ’69 self-titled debut.

Standout tracks are plentiful and include the intimate ‘Web Of Tangled Reason’ and ‘The Rabbi At The Gates Of Prague’. Highly recommended.

Cheers, Alan!

"The Way It Was" - first radio play...

"The Way It Was" gets its first radio play tomorrow night! André Steijns will be playing the title track on his Paperlate Show on Dutch station BRTO-Radio. The show begins at 1900 UK time, and I'm told TWIW will be in the second hour. Paperlate is a great show and it's streamed, so no excuses! You can listen live here. There'll be more news about Paperlate next week...

Lichfield Vinyl Night - the videos!

The gig at the George IV in Lichfield last Saturday really went off great!

"The Way It Was", my first vinyl LP for over forty years, was given a really good launch and now four videos with eight songs from the set have been posted online.

There's already been a lot of positive comment about the videos, and particularly about the sound of Big 12, my 1967 Harmony twelve-string guitar. Credit for this to James Brough, the sound engineer on the night. He really made the old lady sing!

Here's where you'll find the videos:

Part One (Nine Minutes / The Way It Was)
Part Two (St. Elizabeth Of Hungary / Today Began A Thousand Years Ago)
Part Three (Kiss Me With Your Eyes / The Titanic Tragedy)
Part Four (A Nation’s Pride / Where Is Your Gun, My Son?)

Enjoy!

"The Way It Was" launched on vinyl!

The vinyl "The Way It Was" album was officially launched last night at Lichfield Vinyl Night. The gig - my first in 30 years! - went great. Audience reaction was excellent, and I spent a lot of time signing albums. Some old fans travelled quite a distance to be there. One turned up from Bristol! There’ll be something on YouTube presently, but there’s a bit of work to do on that front.

Ritual Echo Records now have the album up on their site as a current item. They’ve also put up a couple of sample tracks in decent quality on their SoundCloud.

Several folks who didn't know all the songs asked about the set list. Here it is...

Nine Minutes (from “Creation”)
The Way It Was (from “The Way It Was”)
St. Elizabeth Of Hungary (from “Edge Of The Dark”)
Today Began A Thousand Years Ago (from “The Way It Was”)
Kiss Me With Your Eyes (from “The Way It Was”)
The Titanic Tragedy (from “The Way It Was”)
A Nation’s Pride (from “Beau”)
Where Is Your Gun, My Son? (from “The Way It Was”)
Red Light In Arcady (from “Edge Of The Dark”)

Encore –

1917 Revolution (from “Beau”)

Thanks to everyone who came, and for your support. As always, watch this space…
