Beau plays on Lionheart Radio...

Many thanks again to Chris McGranaghan for playing Beau on his “Influences” programme last night on Lionheart Radio – two tracks, actually; “Creation” from the original eponymous Dandelion album, and “Environment Knight Of The Puritan Woke” from the new “Bonfires Of The Soul”!

And Chris, I agree; “Environment Knight…” is something of an ear-worm! 😊

John Eliot's thoughts on Beau, and on the new "Bonfires Of The Soul"...

John Eliot’s generous assessment of my work – and of the new “Bonfires Of The Soul” album – is now published on his website.

Bonfires of the Soul

Cherry Red Records

Available on download sites from May 8th

I reckon I began the review of the new music in 2024 from Beau, The Last Confessions of a Saboteur, with this tale. When I was a student in 1972 I spent a great deal of my time and money in the local vinyl shop. There I came across an LP which I could not resist when the hippy behind the counter played me a track or two, Creation from the singer Beau. It also had the benefit of being on John Peel’s Dandelion label which these days is collectable. Reader don’t bother to offer any price. It’s not for sale. I have hundreds of LPs, so many that my wife has been heard to say, ‘Do you really need to buy anymore?’ The LP from 1972 by Beau lives with my singer songwriter records along with Dylan, Cohen, John Prine, Alan Hull, Andy White and others. It is not a whim that I put certain records there. They have to be of a quality. That really says a lot about Beau. He is an excellent writer of song. And the way he performs them shows his importance on words. I edit poetry anthologies with different universities in Europe. Timiᶊoara university in Romania is one of these. I provide the poetry from different poets. The professor, myself, student translator, and poet meet to discuss the poem for translation. The poems have to be of a quality. This year Beau was one of these. His words read as poetry, not simply song lyrics. He is an excellent poet.

In performance he is superb. The quality of his 12 string guitar playing has to be heard to be believed. Sounds a bit corny, but true. As I write I’ve reach the 49 minute mark the final track, The Glass We Knew, where guitar is plucked and all strings hit. Beautifully played. Sung, with feeling and memorable melody. A moving final track to an excellent collection of songs. I’m wiping away a tear.

He’s also published a link to my full “Creation” album, an original vinyl of which he’s had since 1971!

Many thanks, John!

Mark E Smith and Beau's "Creation"...

I’m sure, like me, you’ve wondered over time how Mark E Smith managed to maintain his street cred? Well, a December 1977 photoshoot from Mark E’s flat in Kevin Cummins’ 2022 book, “Telling Stories – Photographs Of The Fall”, reveals all!

We all judge people by their wall art, and here Mark E notably has on display the Beau “Creation” sleeve from ’71!

(Granted, he appears to have scrawled his Tesco shopping list across it, but you certainly can’t fault the man’s taste!)

Many thanks to Ian Green for flagging this one up!

"Creation" spotted in New Zealand...

 Now here’s a thing!

Yesterday, Ralph Sims, the drummer with the old Raiders band I was with sixty years ago, found himself in a small town called Geraldine on the South Island of New Zealand. Spotting a café-cum-vinyl-record-shop, he and wife Cathy naturally repaired there for coffee.

The first thing he spotted on the wall for sale was an original copy of “Creation”! Having cautioned the owner against disposing of such a valuable artefact, Ralph had him remove it from the wall to prove its authenticity – in the process, recording the occasion for posterity.

So, my new favourite record shop in the world is Record Keeper in Geraldine, NZ!

As everyone knows, once they take hold, you just can’t get rid of Dandelions…

Every little helps...

Here’s one of those things the internet sometimes throws up!

Someone’s mocked up a spoof label for the Japanese release of “Creation”! Trouble is, they’ve used the wrong catalogue #. AIRAC-1456 is a Bridget St John release!

Still, as they say, all publicity is good publicity…

"Silence Returns" in "For The Wild" podcast...

It’s always fascinating to know where and how one’s songs are used!

Today I’ve been pointed to the Canadian “For The Wild” podcast, hosted by a lady called Ayana Young.

This cast dates from 2018, and opens – after Ms Young’s opening remarks – with the vocal section of “Silence Returns” from the “Creation” album.

The meat of the podcast is an interview with activist author Adrienne Maree Brown.

Beware the bootleg of "Creation"...

A quick heads-up. There’s a standalone CD of “Creation” still being sold on the PID label (mostly through eBay with an EAN no. 4571136374595). THIS IS A BOOTLEG, and it’s not even being sold cheap! Please be careful.

The only official standalone “Creation” CD is the on the Japanese Air Mail Archive label (AIRAC-1459) with the facsimile sleeve.

The download “Creation Recreated” is still available from Cherry Red and, for vinyl fans, there is of course also the 2015 reissue LP from Guerssen/Sommor.
